Sgt. Slaughter is an American retired professional wrestler and voice actor. Debuting in 1972-1974 under his real name and various gimmicks like Super Destroyer Mark II, he rose to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s with his iconic U.S. Marine drill sergeant persona—complete with campaign hat and mirrored sunglasses.
He achieved major success in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) (where he won the NWA World Tag Team Championship with Don Kernodle), and the World Wrestling Federation. There, he captured the WWF Championship in 1991 (defeating The Ultimate Warrior), held the WWF United States Championship. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004 by Pat Patterson, he later served as a WWE ambassador and commissioner figure.
In addition to wrestling, Sgt. Slaughter crossed into pop culture through licensing his character to the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero franchise in the mid-1980s, appearing as a tough drill instructor in the animated series (voicing himself across multiple episodes starting in 1986), the 1987 animated film G.I. Joe: The Movie, and related comics and toys. His distinctive gravelly voice and military archetype made him a standout in the franchise.
He has made occasional acting and voice appearances, including voicing Sgt. Slaughter in the 2014 video game G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Dr. Military in a 2013 Teen Titans Go! episode. Other credits include guest spots tied to his wrestling persona in WWE-related productions. Today, the legendary "Sarge" remains a pop culture icon from wrestling's golden era.
